IRVING – If Ricky Carmichael is the biggest star in supercross, then Australian Chad Reed is its most popular young star.

Reed, who lives in Tuscany Hills, Calif., was the crowd favorite at Texas Stadium on Saturday. Reed won the AMA Supercross Series 250cc race ahead of Honda's Kevin Windham. It was Reed's 10th win of the season. The 22-year-old Yamaha factory rider leads the AMA Supercross 250cc series with 336 points. Reed is looking for that title to go along with his 2003 THQ World Supercross GP 250cc title. It was Reed who was starstruck Saturday, however, when he was informed that supercross legend Jeremy McGrath was in the stands. McGrath, who retired last year, was a seven-time 250cc supercross champion. "It's always an honor to race here," Reed said. "Jeremy is a great friend and gives me great advice. It's all about having fun. That's what makes it motivating to go race to race." Reed has been a pro for six years. He won the Australian supercross championship in 2000 and finished second in the world standings in 2001. In 2002, Reed was the 125cc East champion, winning seven of the eight races.

Voss puts on show for 'home crowd'

Heath Voss told the "home crowd' at Texas Stadium that he had a feeling it would be his night to shine. Voss, from Mico, Texas, near San Antonio, didn't disappoint, finishing second in his heat of the 250cc race and fifth in the finals. Voss, 26, also took the lead in the THQ World Supercross GP season standings after earning 25 points Saturday, increasing his season total to 296. Voss, a Yamaha satellite team member, entered the competition tied for first with Honda's Damon Huffman with 271 points. Voss and Huffman have two more races against each other. The next event is in Salt Lake City on Saturday, and the schedule concludes in Las Vegas on May 1.

Youngsters shine in exhibition

One of the most entertaining events of the AMA Supercross Series was the KTM Jr. Supercross Challenge. Fourteen 7- and 8-year-olds raced for one spot in Salt Lake City on Saturday. Joshua Cartwright, 8, from Memphis, Tenn., took a commanding lead early and held it. Seven-year-old Cadin Carter of Humble, Texas, finished ninth, and 8-year-old Koby Morrow of Houston was 10th.
